Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)
The MPO is currently updating its 2035 long-range Metropolitan Transportation plan, and we are asking for your help!
So, what is a Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP)?
An MTP identifies what major transportation projects are needed in the region over a 25 year period and how they will be paid for. The federal government requires that MTP be updated every five years and the one for the Midland-Odessa region is due in December of 2009.
The current MTP was most recently amended in April 2005. This time around the MPO is developing its plan with the help of a consulting team consisting of Wilbur Smith Associates, Renaissance Planning Group, Parkhill, Smith, and Cooper, and Musketball Technologies.
The MPO’s mission is to use a transparent and citizen-led discussion and process to ensure the development of a community vision that articulates a plan for the future and includes projects that address land use and transportation challenges facing the region. This planning process, called a scenario planning/community visioning process, represents a new trend in transportation and land use planning and is being strongly promoted by the Federal Highway Administration. The plan will address all modes of transportation and will address such issues as safety, security, and environmental considerations.
Our theme for this MTP update is “Two Cities, One Community….A Place to Live, A Place to Work, A Place to Play” and one that really attempts to bring the energies of the two cities together to create a seamless and thriving metropolitan region.
